Albert Einstein said: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results."
Imagine spending over $1 TRILLION without getting positive results, and continuing down the same path. Are we nuts?! Totally insane?!?
I admit that when I first heard Jerry Cameron, of LEAP, talk about legalizing drugs, I was surprised. Jerry is, after all, a law enforcement veteran with over 17 years experience, and he was speaking to our Rotary club here in very conservative St. Augustine.
We’ve been brainwashed to believe that The War on Drugs is the “American” thing to do, and anyone who was against it was UN-American. (Just like they tried to brainwash us into believing that it was UN-American to question sending our young people to Iraq to be killed. I feel like doing a Frank Cotolo rant here: who is “they” and what power do they have anyway? It is UN-American to remain silent, or to follow like sheep WITHOUTasking questions!)
Anyway, back to Jerry. He, and LEAP, make a very convincing argument for ending prohibition (after all, it didn’t work back in the 1920’s either).
And so I just had to interview him for my podcast “Off The Beaten Path” found at BoomerYak.com . (Thanks to the folks at Yaktivate.com ).
ABOUT WAR
Have you noticed how fighting against something makes it stronger and puts all the focus in the wrong place?
Instead of winning...the addiction rate is the same as it was $1 Trillion dollars ago, our jail population has grown at an unbelievable rate, young people are jailed for a few ounces of marijuana while violent criminals who pose a real threat to society are released because of prison overcrowding...and the list goes on. And on.
ABOUT MONEY
The illegal drug business is the largest business in the US, and it is completely tax free.
Can you imagine what we could do with $1 Trillion? How far would that go toward improving our education system? Toward finding ways to reduce poverty? Toward finding non-polluting, sustainable energy sources?
The politicians would have you believe that Utopia is only in the mind of drug users.
I believe Utopia would be a country that put its money and energy toward raising and educating healthy children, providing basic health care for all its citizens, creating a safe, sustainable environment, and giving us hope for a peaceful world.
Well, that’s my rant for now.
Here’s Jerry!
And take a few minutes to educate yourself. Learn about LEAP. Watch the 12 minute video (recommended by Walter Cronkite).
And, these numbers on the Drug War Clock on what the War on Drugs has cost us in the US so far this year will make you sick to your stomach. And we’re paying for this?!
Are you wondering what you can do?
- Get involved with LEAP and have a spokesperson speak to your organization
- write your congressmen and women, educate yourself
- and help make this a safe country to have an honest and open discussion without being afraid of finger-pointing, political blacklisting and name-calling.
And, no, this is not an excuse for you to go break the law. Let's just change it!
